My journey getting back into golf continues…

So far, I’ve taken a couple of lessons, hit the driving range a few times, and poked around on the putting green. I’m feeling strong and ready to hit the course!

Since I’ve picked up a few pointers along the way, I figured I’d share them with you guys.

These easy golf tips for beginners, brought to you in partnership with Adidas Golf, will help anyone who is interested in trying their hand at the sport but doesn’t know where to start.

With these helping hints, you’ll have the confidence to pick up a club and hit the driving range with some pals — try out a ladies’ date at the driving range, perhaps?

1. Keep it simple with the clubs.

When you’re first starting out, you only need a few clubs — a driver, a sand wedge, and a putter will do the job while you’re perfecting your practice.

Go for clubs with a lot of “loft,” which will help you get the ball in the air. Look for drivers with 10 degrees of loft and woods with 17 degrees. Wider, weightier irons will also help you get more air.

Finally, hybrids are a good option if you have the funds, and often easier to use for beginner golfers than regular irons.

2. Start with your stance.

Make sure you have a wide, solid stance. Your inner feet should line up with the outside of your shoulders. A steady foundation is the starting point for a successful shot.

Your toes should be pointing straight forward. Put a slight bend in the knees, and hinge forward at the waist.

Arms should be straight out in front of you, comfortably extended toward the ball so that you’re not standing too upright, but also not reaching too far forward.

Line the ball up directly between your legs, a club’s length in front of you.

3. Get a grip.

There are three types of golf grips — interlocking, overlapping, and a baseball grip.

I was originally taught with an interlinking grip, but I’ve been preferring a baseball grip lately. Try them out, and figure out which works best for you.

This article has a good rundown on how to determine the best grip for you and adjust your pressure throughout your swing.
