Two ingredients (chia seeds and fruit) + two minutes = unbelievable tastiness.
I learned this awesome kitchen hack from my mother-in-law. She knows what a seed nut I am and was shocked when she found out I didn’t know about the fabulous concoction that is chia seed jam.
In the same way that chia seeds expand in water and transform into the ideal, gooey, egg replacement, they also form a jelly-like consistency when combined with pureed fruit. What results is a delicious, naturally sweetened “jam” that gives Smuckers a run for their money.
Chia jam is a great way to add an extra dose of omega-3 fatty acid (goodbye, inflammation) and fiber (hello, healthy digestive system) to your meals.
For those with a sweet tooth, you can increase the ingredient list and add a drop of honey or maple syrup, but I find the natural sugar in the fruit to be sufficient.
This easy combo makes for an incredibly healthy topping that goes great on everything from toast to waffles to oatmeal.
I used this strawberry version of chia seed jam recently on my favorite gluten-free, vegan Banana Oat Waffles and it was scrumptious.
Any fruit will do. Some of my favorite combos are strawberries, raspberries, peaches, and blackberries.
- ½ cup fruit, pureed
- ¼ cup chia seeds
- Mix ingredients together and let sit for at least two minutes.
- Store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.
You can use fresh or frozen fruit for this recipe. Either way, just make sure it’s at room temperature when you get to mixing, and thoroughly mashed or pureed. Chia seeds absorb moisture better when the liquid isn’t too cold.
I store my chia seed jam in a mason jar in the refrigerator. It usually lasts about one to two weeks.
